Independence Day with a cause

Two Districts. Two Rotary Clubs. Two Annettes Clubs. Independence Day. Scores of Rotarians and Inner Wheelers. And, binding this unlikely yet delightful constellation together, a shared commitment to the environment.

If one were compelled to compress the morning of 15 August 2026 into a single sentence, that would perhaps suffice. But the morning itself deserves more than a sentence.

Our Club President had one of those mornings that permit little by way of leisurely contemplation—oscillating between the Independence Day celebrations at PJG School and the e-waste collection drive organised by our Annettes at Orchid Springs Apartments, Korattur.

By the time he arrived, the two collection bins had already begun acquiring the unmistakable heft of a successful initiative: discarded televisions, obsolete gadgets and assorted electronic detritus were being surrendered for responsible disposal rather than condemned to an irresponsible afterlife.

What was particularly gratifying was to see an idea conceived by our Annettes acquire such immediate community resonance.

Annette Mithra spoke with infectious conviction about the project and the work of our Annette Club, while our project partners from the Annette Club of Rotary Club of Chennai Orchid added their own voice and enthusiasm to the occasion.

DGE of District 3233, Ganapathy Suresh—himself the President of the Orchid Springs Apartment Federation—commended the initiative and congratulated the Annettes. His observation was both simple and profound: in caring for the environment, we are, in the ultimate analysis, caring for ourselves. Rotary, he rightly pointed out, provides the institutional architecture through which such noble impulses can be translated into meaningful action.

Then came an unexpected, but entirely appropriate, coda.

Two Southerners—President Srikanth and Annette Chair Magdoom —rolled up their sleeves and donated blood at the parallel blood donation campaign organised by the Orchidians.

Thus, in the course of a single morning, we managed to celebrate the nation, serve the community, care for the environment and donate blood. One could scarcely ask for a more comprehensive portfolio of civic virtue before lunch.

A Saturday morning, therefore, exceptionally well spent.

And if our Annettes deserve anything at all for having conceived and ignited this initiative, it is not merely applause, but a great big hug.

They have demonstrated, once again, that consequential ideas need not arrive with fanfare. Sometimes, they arrive quietly, in the form of two collection bins—and then proceed to fill up rather quickly.
